Speaker of Parliament Doctor Jiko Luveni is expected to be laid to rest this Saturday. A church service will be held at the Centenary Methodist Church in Suva.

Dr Luveni passed away last Saturday.

While the cause of her death has not been released yet, it is understood she passed away after a short illness.

Meanwhile; the Parliament of Fiji in a statement stated: “The Office of the Secretary-General to Parliament wishes to advise the general public that a condolence book in honor of the late Speaker of the Fijian Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni, was open for signature at the Parliament Foyer.”

The Parliament Foyer was open from Monday and would also be open tomorrow, December 27 from 10am to 3pm and Friday from 10am to 1pm.

Everyone is welcome to leave a message of condolence in this book.

The ‘ireguregu’ will be held at the late Speaker’s residence, 17 Hamilton Beattie Street, Domain, beginning tomorrow at 10am.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama in his Christmas message made a special mention of Dr. Luveni and said that the first woman Speaker of Parliament had changed the status quo of Fijian politics.

“Through her service, she led us all through the most important years of our budding parliamentary democracy,” he said.

“She remained always as a reasoned and impartial voice of understanding; a guiding light that illuminated truth amidst even the most heated of politics debates.”

Her family has chosen not to share details of the funeral as yet.
