Electric New Zealand 7s wing Jona Nareki was given warm traditional ceremonies of welcome by his family and relatives at Albert Park in Suva on Monday night.

Nareki was accorded the traditional cerevi (traditional welcome) by his cousins as he walked into the Albert Park pavilion where they had the kava ceremony and a feast to celebrate the achievement of the Nakoronawa, Nakasaleka, Kadavu native.

The Kadavu native was part of the victorious New Zealand U20 side that won the U20 Championship last year and was drafted into the New Zealand 7s team this year for the 2018/2019 World Rugby Sevens Series.

He made his debut in Hong Kong this year.

The 21-year-old was part of the victorious New Zealand 7s team that won gold in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and the 2018 Rugby Sevens World Cup.

It was after the World Cup win when his paternal cousins in Fiji planned for a grand celebration for the Otago winger as he comes home for Christmas on Christmas Eve.

His cousins took him by surprise as they all wore black T-shirts with his jersey number and his name printed at the back.

Nareki acknowledged his cousins and relatives for the grand welcome and the feast they prepared for him.

“I was not expecting this to happen and i want to thank you all my cousins for doing this, from the cerevi and vakamamaca (traditional welcome and celebration) and to this feast, thank you,” he said.

His cousin Matelita Mara said; “We planned all this straight after the World Cup just to celebrate his achievement and it’s good to have him home spending Christmas.”

Nareki, who have maternal links to Naduri, Nadroga, returns to New Zealand this Sunday to continue his preparation for the second leg of the series in Hamilton on January 26-27 and Sydney on February 1-3.
