A three-year-old child from Rakiraki was hit by a vehicle on Christmas Eve in Nakavu Village in Navua on Monday.
It is believed that the child had accompanied her mother to do Christmas shopping in Navua.
The two are believed to have been standing on the road side when the toddler left her mother’s hand and ran to cross the road.
She was hit by an oncoming vehicle.
The victim was conveyed to Navua Hospital and later was referred to CWM Hospital.
Director Traffic Senior Superintendent of Police Mahesh Mishra said parents needed to take responsibility for their children at all times.
He said Fiji could not afford to lose people to road accidents because of negligence.
