A Fijian-born Newman Police Department officer was shot and killed while on duty on Wednesday.

33-year-old Ronil Singh had made a traffic stop in Newman.

According to the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department:

“At 12:57 AM, Officer Singh called off on a traffic stop at Merced Street and Eucalyptus Avenue in Newman. A few moments later he called out “shots fired” over the radio. Multiple agencies responded to assist and Singh was found at the scene with gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.”

Mr Singh worked for the Newman Police Department since July of 2011.

His family migrated to the US in 2002. The late Mr Singh is survived by his Anamika wife and a 5-month old son. A memorial fund has been set up by the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

Working on a tip-off, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department detectives served a search warrant in the 26000 block of River Road just outside of Newman. The truck has been recovered and is being processed for evidence.

A manhunt has been launched for the suspect.
