In a bid to avoid traffic and reduce air pollution, Eroni Takape has encouraged people to cycle to work and school.

Having received $7000 from the Fiji Ministry of Youth and Sports earlier this month, Mr Takape decided to invest in a cycling business.

Mr Takape, 43, said his passion to contribute to the environment led him to open his very own bicycle shop.

Known as ‘Takape Bicycling’, with more than 400 bicycles, the shop was opened on December 18 and is located at Nokonoko, Laucala Beach.

Mr Takape said: “Fiji’s traffic congestion is increasing and we have to come up with solutions. Everyone is confined to travelling in a car which is not very healthy.

“Cars release a lot of carbo-monoxide which is bad for nature and we can reduce this by cycling to work rather than driving a vehicle.”

Mr Takape added that he holds cycling classes for $5 per hour and renting a bicycle is $20 per day.

“We requested for bicycles from Chicago and the American peace cop volunteers helped us bring the bikes to Fiji,” Mr Takepe said.

He said they also repair second-hand bikes.

Meanwhile, Mr Takape said his passion changed his family’s life.

He has three children and two of his daughters are taking part in the triathlon in the South Pacific Games.

“My children believe in staying fit and healthy,” he said.
