Five prison escapees have been questioned while two are still recovering at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

This was confirmed by Police Chief of Intelligence and Investigations Assistant Commissioner of Police Vakacegu Toduadua yesterday.

He said the five escapees were interviewed after the preliminary investigations were completed.

“We have interviewed five escapees while we wait for the other two to recover. They are still admitted at the CWM Hospital.

“Once the interview process for all seven inmates are completed then we will formally charge them,” ACP Toduadua said.

The seven escapees who were recaptured within 24 hours of their escape are Ulaiasi Qalomai, Filipe Delana, Mesulame Waqabaca, Josaia Usumaki, Peniasi Qalibau, Bainivalu Tuimatavesi and Solomoni Qurai.

Qalomai and Delana were recaptured by Corrections officers in bushes at Wainadoi on Monday. The two inmates were serving prison sentences for aggravated robbery. Delana is serving 10 years for aggravated robbery while Qalomai was sentenced to eight years and nine months in 2014 with a non-parole term of seven years, also for aggravated robbery.

Usumaki was also recaptured at Wainadoi by Corrections officers. Usumaki, who was jailed for aggravated robbery, had escaped from prison previously. His last escape was on September 17, 2012.

Waqabaca was captured by the Corrections officers near Vunisoco Bible College, also hiding in bushes. He was serving 14 years in prison for murder.

Qurai, who was serving a life sentence for murder, previously escaped from prison in September 17, 2012. He and Usumaki were serving jail terms also related to the daring daylight robbery at the Bank South Pacific a few days after their escape in 2012;

Tuimatavesi was jailed for 10 years for aggravated robbery in 2016. He was serving time for escaping from lawful custody previously.

Qalibau was serving a jail term for aggravated robbery.
