Nathan Hughes aims to play competitive rugby for Wasps and England in 2019.

The Fijian-born loose-forward and former St Thomas High School student arrived last Friday to attend his late grandfather David Joseph William’s funeral.

He is currently at his grandparents’ residence in Balawa, Lautoka.

“I had shocking news on Christmas Day when my Mum informed me that granddad  had died,” he said.

“I want to farewell my granddad who brought us up.”

Hughes said 2018 was a rocky year for him but he had overcome the challenges and now focused on the New Year.

“2018 was tough and I was injured but I’m trying to play consistent rugby for Wasps and England in 2019.

“I’m not thinking too much about the Rugby World Cup because you’ve got to take the little steps and the first one is to play well for Wasps in the English Premiership.

“I think the main thing is trying to play some consistent rugby.

“The thing that I am looking forward to when I go back on Wednesday is trying to get back on the winning horse again and try and finish this season well.”

Meanwhile, coming back to spend quality time with his family was also something Hughes was looking forward to.

“It’s nice to always come back here and enjoy some family time and I know it was a bit of a sad one but it’s nice to see the family,” he said.
