The former national 7s rep said the Gareth Baber-coached side need to watch discipline and defence

Former Fijian 7s rep and Pio Tuwai is happy with the way the Gareth Baber-coached side played in the first cluster of the World Sevens Series in Dubai and Cape Town

He said the side bounced back in style after finishing fifth in Dubai to win the Cape Town Sevens in clinical fashion.

Now playing for the Marlborough Rugby Union Football Club in England, Tuwai is following the progress of the Kalione Nasoko-captained team.

“The team is doing pretty good and the young players are blending in well,”Tuwai said.

The Votua, Ba native is particularly impressed with young Meli Derenalagi.

“I love watching him play as a prop. He is young and he has a lot of potential.”

His advice to the team is to be disciplined and beef up defence.

“The only concern would be defence and the need to take it to another level,”Tuwai said.

Club Contract

The 35-year old secured a two-year rugby contract with Marlborough Rugby Football Union Club in England.

He joined this year and has featured six times for the club and scored five tries so far.

He was approached to take part in a sevens competition and was later urged to play for their senior 15s team as well.

The club has a good representation of Fiji, Tonga and Samoa players.

“I joined the club to play in the 7s competition and they asked me to join the XVs team.

“I first played at No.8 then they shifted me to play centre/wing due to my offloading skills and speed.”

Some of the Fijian players playing in the team are Tauyavu Bativagone, Viliame Waqanidrola, Waisale Navunidakua, Ben Caravou, Inosi Laqekoro,  Maika Qiolevu, Joeli Radovu, Serupepeli Niubasaga, Mosese Nailago, Nakeleto Nadakeke, Semisi Rasivo, Jimione Ranatora, Pita Robanakadavu, Wilden Robanakadavu, Josaia Tavaga, Jo Visei, Ratu Vuira, Mitieli Vulikijapani and Autiko Domonakibau (coach).

Tuwai will always be available to play for Fiji.

“I will put my hands up. I know what it means to don that jersey,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tuwai and wife Lily Vasu had their traditional wedding ceremony in Votua, Ba on Friday.

They live in Hamilton, New Zealand and are likely to move to England due to Tuwai’s rugby commitments.
