The Nadi Town Council is concerned that members of the public using Wailoaloa Beach continue to dump rubbish carelessly even though there are litter bins placed there.

Council chief executive officer, Robin Ali, highlighted the council’s initiative for the festive season and the importance of keeping beaches clean.

“We take the dumping of rubbish seriously, especially on our beaches,” Mr Ali.

“We also emphasise cleanliness in our town area and environment, but people are not taking it seriously.

“Last year one of our initiatives for Wailoaloa Beach was the placing of 15 bins around the area in order to end the unnecessary dumping of rubbish,” he said.

“But, still the people don’t care nor consider the council’s bid to ensure cleanliness of our beaches.

“It is 2019 now and people still desecrate the beaches. If they can’t put their rubbish in the bins provided, they should take it home with them,” Mr Ali added.

Amelia Qeqe of Vagadra, Nadroga said, her family came all the way from Nadroga to celebrate New Year’s Day at Wailoaloa Beach.

“We always love coming here, but I think people should take good care of the beautiful beach and its surroundings,” Ms Qeqe said.

“We want to come, relax and breathe fresh air. We don’t want to be affected by the foul smell of garbage, especially diapers that are thrown everywhere and also broken bottles that are strewn all over the place. Our children can be affected by these,” she said.

Mr Ali said  members of the public should be mindful of the beautiful beaches in Nadi and to keep them clean and tidy at all times.
