A 39-year-old Fi­jian former Brit­ish Army soldier, drowned in the Ba River on New Year’s Day while swimming with friends.

Richard Lewavaka, who was a tenant at a flat in Varadoli, Ba, was identi­fied as the victim who lost his life at the Ba River.

His neighbour, who wished to remain anony­mous, said Mr Lewavaka was renting for more than a year at the flat.

“I only got to know the victim when assisting him move into the flat sometime last year,” the neighbour said .

“I can’t remember his name, but he told me that he would be in Fiji for a while to relax his mind away from work and that he was going to return to the Brit­ish Army.

“He was at home every day, he would have a few drinks with some friends at times but each day at midday I would see him doing his training.”

The last time he saw Mr Lewavaka was last week.Meanwhile, police assistant public relations officer, Pawan Kumar said attempts to revive the victim were unsuccessful.

Mr Kumar said the post mortem examination of the victim was yet to be conducted.
