Hazelman Lucky Not To Be Buried in Landslide

Savusavu couple say they are lucky not to have been buried alive by the landslide at Bagaraki yesterday.

Noleen Hazelman in her 40’s was making her way from Nabouwalu to Savusavu with her husband Simon Hazelman, in his 50’s when part of the mountain side started to slip onto the road.

“We were traveling in our vehicle when soil slowly started falling right in front of us,” she said.

Ms Hazelman said that her immediate feeling was that the car could be buried with the landslide.

“We were just a few seconds away but luckily we managed to survive,” she said.

“A large portion of the soil  erosion brought the entire traffic on both sides to a halt.

“We immediately moved out of the vehicle as a power pole had also been affected.

“The line on the power pole started sparking and it looked as if it was going to snap.

“We immediately called for help and soon Police and staff from Energy Fiji Limited arrived.”

Ms Hazelman said a day filled with family gatherings and prayers could have ended tragically.

“Our prayers saved us. I told my husband that we could have been buried under the landslide,” she said.

The couple have three children and were glad to return home safely to Savusavu.

“We are so lucky to be saved because we were also driving slowly,” Ms Hazelman said.

“Our fate could have been decided in just a matter of seconds.”
