Police Confirm Our First Road Fatality This Year

A 57-year-old man of Vuda Point, Lautoka, is our first road fatality, Police have confirmed.

Adbdul Hafiz died after the vehicle he was travelling in veered off the road somewhere between Ba and Lautoka on New Year’s Day.

Assistant Police public relations officer Pawan Kumar said Mr Hafiz suffered serious injuries after his his vehicle veered off the road while driving from Ba to Lautoka.

Mr Hafiz was rushed to the Lautoka Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Family and friends of Mr Hafiz did not want to comment on the issue when the Fiji Sun visited his home yesterday.

According to the Police, last year, 70 people died on our roads from January 1 to December 31. Speeding was the primary cause for 32 fatalities while 15 people died because of drink driving.
