The Open Merit Recruitment and Selection (OMRS) process is working out well for the Ministry of Education says Minster Rosy Akbar.

She made the remarks as she officiated the three-day Head of School Induction workshop for primary and secondary schools and Technical Colleges at the Suva Grammar School hall yesterday.

A total of 80 school heads have been promoted this year under the OMRS system.

Of this, 50 appointments have been made for primary schools, 26 for secondary and four who will be assuming duty as head of centres for Technical Colleges.

Ms Akbar said the ministry was looking to nurture modern day leaders and added there was no room for dictatorial leadership in the modern education system.

“A mixed age group of leaders have been promoted through the OMRS system and I hope they will help the Government implement new policies and pave the way forward for a modern Fiji and a modern education for our children,” she said,

“We will be strictly monitoring their performances over the next four or five years as per their contracts.”

She also urged the school heads to continue to teach classes while taking on the new portfolio.

“The school heads are one of the most experienced people in the school, so they should be teaching,” the minister said.

“When they teach and produce results, it sets an example for the other teachers.”

Ms Akbar added the ministry was also trying to train more counsellors to assist school teachers in terms of disciplining children and providing guidance.

“These counsellors will be based at the various divisions and schools can utilise them,” she said.
