Over the past week while most Fijians were celebrating Christmas and the arrival of New Year there were dedicated workers providing essential services.

They included personnel from the National Fire Authority, Fiji Police Force along with buses and taxi drivers.

Apart from providing a safe environment these workers ensured their services reached the people so all could enjoy the festive season.

Chief Operations Officer Assistant Commissioner of Police, Maretino Qiolevu, said it was their duty to ensure that Fijians were safe throughout the year.

“We wanted to decrease road fatality. We were present at all various hotspots and areas that we know that had prevalent criminal activities,” ACP Qiolevu said.

“Our Operation Yadrayadravaki started early December and it intensified during the Christmas and New Year period.

“We wanted the citizens of Fiji to enjoy Christmas and New Year as well as to make their environment secure.”

Fiji Taxi Association general secretary Ashwin Lal said they would always provide services to the public.

“We are obliged to provide services to the people during the festive season,” Mr Lal said.

“We note that there are too many private vehicles and rental cars that are running as Taxis.

“We will be having a talanoa session with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) so that we can ask them to change the colour of the number plates on the rental permits.”
