Archbishop Peter Loy Chong has confirmed that there has been no reported case of sexual offences among priests in the country.

“As of today, there has not been any case,” the head of the Catholic Church of Fiji said.

His comments follow a global outrage where reports of such cases have occurred including one in India where nuns have spoken out.

Archbishop Loy Chong said the church had policies in place to deal with such cases.

He said that as far as the church was concerned, all the Catholic parishes in Fiji have policies in place to handle any such case.

Archbishop Loy Chong said that there would be serious charges if someone was caught.

He also highlighted that child and sexual abuse was not only a Catholic priest issue, it happened everywhere, even in families and homes too.

According to a Radio New Zealand yesterday Archbishop Loy Chong had welcomed Pope Francis’ call for priests who sexually abuse children to turn themselves into the authorities.

The Telegraph reported the Pope saying: “Any priest who abuses a child is a vicious wolf ready to devour innocent souls”.

Pope Francis expressed his sorrow and asked for forgiveness, adding that the church was aware of the damage and would continue to tackle the problem.

Pope Francis is the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State in Rome.
