Cyclone Mona Update: Vishnu Deo Primary Open As Waters Rise At Wailea

A second evacuation centre was activated in the last hour.
This comes after reports were received of rising flood waters at the Wailea settlement.
National Disaster Management Office Director, Anare Leweniqila confirmed Vishnu Deo Memorial Primary School has been activated.
With the assistance of Police, only a handful of people had started arriving at the Vishnu Deo evacuation centre.

At a press conference, Mr Leweniqila said all operational arms of Government are now active including divisional and district levels.
NDMO is also working with the Ministry of Education to ensure that schools are on standby in case they are needed.
“As we proceed into the night, we accept heavy rain and we are working around the clock with Police to ensure that those living in flood-prone areas move to their designated evacuation centres.”
He said one can expect a lot of trees and makeshift shelters to be vulnerable during a Category 2 cyclone.
