Major road maintenance work is underway to repair 10 kilometres of the 32-kilometre Dawasamu Road.

Working under the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), Fulton Hogan Hiways is currently providing road maintenance in the Central, Eastern and Northern Divisions.

Dawasamu Road is most important to farmers as it provides the main access to Korovou Town. It runs from Korovou to the village of Barotu, where it connects with the Kings Road.

It services Queen Victoria School, several settlements and many villages, including Qelekuro, Luvunavuaka, Nataleira, Dawasamu, Voro and Natadradave Villages.

The road has been severely damaged by heavy and often overloaded vehicles.

It has been in such poor condition that carriers and buses would occasionally get stuck and have to be towed out.

Significant work is now in place to strengthen the road against the impact of heavily loaded vehicles.

This includes preparing the road surface, reshaping and forming the road and replacing the uneven surfaces with compacted gravel.

The work includes grading, as well as spot metalling, drainage and clearing shoulders on the various damaged sites.

Nataleira villager and Takalana Bay Resort Manager, Ratu Josefa Bau said the new road upgrade would greatly boost access for the people of Dawasamu.

“Local communities now have a better transport options instead of relying solely on buses especially in case of emergencies,” Mr Bau said.

“Before it used to be really hard looking for transportation, some drivers might even refuse to transport many of us to our villages because of poor road condition.

“A lot of our community members rely solely on selling agricultural goods in the market and sometimes, transportation don’t reach their doorsteps at home because of access.

“Now all that would be nothing but a thing of the past.

“In terms of tourism, since we run and operate small tours and eco tourism resorts, the new road upgrade will greatly boost business to our district, and I must commend and thank Fiji Roads Authority and Fulton Hogan Hiways for the great work and effort.”
