Peni Qumu, a close friend and neighbour of the late Param Wati, yesterday paid tribute to the woman whom he said was like a mother to him.

Ms Wati died in a fire on New Year’s Eve where her 10-bedroom home at Dreketi Feeder Road in Saweni was partially destroyed.

As Mr Qumu delivered the eulogy, hundreds gathered at the home to pay their last respects.

“It’s been about four years now that I have come to know this lady ever since I built my house on the other side,” Mr Qumu said.

“She was the wife of Vijay Kumar, he was a well-known gentleman working for the Fiji Sugar Corporation for a long time.

“I came to know this lady after she was struck by this sickness, stroke, she was like a mother to me, I encouraged her that she was going to walk again when I use to come here to massage her and she was able to walk again.

“While you are alive try to do good things to others, try to be good to others because you don’t know the day you will leave this earth,” he said.

Ms Wati is survived by her two sons, Pravin Kumar and Ravind Kumar.

She was laid to rest at the Dreketi Cemetery in Saweni, Lautoka.
