The Government is continuing its commitment to keep municipalities clean by equipping the Nadi Town Council with a new 9 tonne garbage compactor truck worth $240,000.

Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism (MITT), Local Government, Housing and Community Development Premila Kumar reinforced Government’s initiative.

“Government wants to work in partnership with the municipality for doing their job properly,” she said at the handover yesterday.

Ms Kumar said the project would assist the council which had already taken many initiatives to improve facilities for the transition of Nadi to become a city.

The new developments included the upgrading of the Nadi International Airport, Nadi Municipal Market and the construction of a four-lane highway along the Wailoaloa and Nadi Airport route.

“For any town and city waste collection is a main concern. Every day we produce a lot of waste and we expect the municipality to come to collect that waste whether it’s business, garden or kitchen waste,” Ms Kumar said.

“It is the job of the Government to support these organisations and assist them further. We hope with this truck NTC can do their work better,” she said.

Council special administrator Robin Ali thanked the Government for its continuous support.
