The 24-hour public convenience service provided for Sigatoka residents has impressed the Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Premila Kumar.

After meeting members of the Lautoka City Council yesterday Ms Kumar highlighted this in an interview.

She said this was a core area she wanted all municipal councils to look into.

“I was quite impressed with the fact that they opened a toilet facility, 24 hours and similarly in Nadi there are toilet facilities that open 24 hours,” Ms Kumar said.

“That’s what we want, all municipalities to provide that service efficiently.”

Ms Kumar highlighted, she was satisfied with the performance of members from the Sigatoka Town Council.

“Sigatoka, I would say they are on top of things. Their audit reports are all in order. They know what they are doing, it’s a very small town so they have a few rate payers,” she said.

“In terms of business houses, there are quite a few and you can see that Sigatoka is growing in terms of business.

“Sigatoka, all in all, they know what they are doing I’m very pleased with their performance.”

She said during discussions with members from the council, the relocation of the Sigatoka Market including the bus-stand also popped up.

Ms Kumar added, during her visitation to the Nadi Town Council on January 3, there were also discussions to declare Nadi a city.

“There were talks of declaring Nadi as a city, we will like to proceed with that,” she said.

“There are just a few things that we need to tie in when the idea of Nadi to be declared a city was announced.

“In the last Pudget, the announcement was made that the local authorities would now be part of the municipalities so we just want to tie that in before we declare Nadi as a city,” Ms Kumar said.
