Record Shows Decline In Calls For Counselling

Lifeline Fiji received a total of 1607 calls in 2018 which showed a decline from the 2017 records.

Supervisor of Lifeline Fiji, Anaseini Boila said that in 2017 they received about 2000 calls.

“There has been a decline in the number of calls received because more services from counselling agencies are now available and there are social welfare programmes which all can access,” she said.

“The calls received were for referrals, appointments and information.”

Mrs Boila said that the youngest victim in 2018 was a 13 year-old male student from St John’s Primary School in Wailoku.

“We hardly get calls from students,” she said.

“The majority of our clients range from 19 to 55 years of age and most of them are males.

“More males are calling with different issues like showing symptoms of stress and anxiety, sometimes its relationship and work related stress.

“Having a toll free line gives callers anonymity and reduces stigmatisation and public scrutiny, especially from family members.

“Client confidentiality is paramount in our line of work.”

Ms Boila said that the top three issues raised from all calls received in 2018 were mostly relationship disputes, abuse (physical and emotional) and suicide ideation.

“We assist them by giving psychological first aid as first responders on the crisis lines, basic counselling and person-centred strategy applied,” Mrs Boila said.

“If matters are serious, it is reported to the Police.”

Call 132454, Lifeline Fiji’s toll free line for help and they are available 24/7.

They have three skilled counsellors that can assist.

Their office is at 256 Waimanu Road.
