The Ali family of Vuda Back Road in Lautoka knocked on the right door of assistance after their home was destroyed by fire.

The Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism and Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Premila Kumar handed a $5000 cheque yesterday.

The family lost their two-bedroom house after a fire completely destroyed it with all their belongings on December 22 last year.

Sheshni Lata made a call to the minister and asked for Government assistance in order to rebuild their life and their family home again.

The minister visited them and reassured them.

Mrs Kumar said, “Mrs Ali called me and ask for any assistance from the Government concerning their house that was burnt down.

“The Government has rolled out a programme for victims of any fire.

“There is a way which the Government can provide assistance. However, there is a criteria to be met. The first one is the person should earn below $50,000 and the second criteria is the house must not be insured,” she said.

“This family has met both criteria.

“As part of the application we require certain documentation.

“One is a Police report, the other one is from the National Fire Authority and the third one is a document whether the house is insured.

“If all those documents are ready then it is done immediately. In her case it was done in two days.

“We hope that the seed money is given today; they will be able to start their life again.

“It is seed money that they will start with something like buying their household items,” she added.

The minister said the purpose of the seed money was for the family to rebuild their lives.
