Cyclone Mona Update: Villagers Find Shelter In School, Community Hall
Navakawau villagers take shelter at a community hall on Taveuni island.

Villagers of Navakawau seeking shelter from Tropical Cyclone Mona are occupying two evacuation centres on Taveuni Island.

Village representative, Laisiasa Tuimouta, yesterday said there were 219 people (99 adults and 120 children) at Navakawau Primary School and 25 people (12 adults and 13 children) at Navakawau Community Hall.

“The villagers, who were victims of Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016, had moved to the evacuation centres three days ago,” Mr Tuimouta said.

“Navakawau is one of the biggest villages on the island having about 117 households and approximately 700 people.

“During TC Winston their houses were badly destroyed, but this time they took precautionary measures.

“In these evacuation centres there are three newborn babies and three expecting mothers.”

The area has been experiencing occasional heavy rain.

Over the past few days when the weather cleared most villagers returned to their houses to cook food and do house chores and before nightfall returned to the evacuation centres.

“All security measures have been taken, the villagers have enough food supply and water,” Mr Tuimouta said.

“I am in constant contact with relevant authorities including the Commissioner Northern’s office supplying updated information on the weather and evacuees.

“So far there has been no major damage or flooding caused by continuous rain.

“We are praying and hope we will be spared because we are still recovering from TC Winston.”
