Ronil Singh touched lives even of those he arrested, says Newman Police Department Chief Randy Richardson.

He was speaking during Corporal Singh’s viewing on Sunday.

Corporal Singh, 33, originally from Navua, was a police officer at the Newman Police Department in California. He was shot at a traffic stop at Merced Street and Eucalypus Avenue on Boxing Day last year.

He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. He is survived by his wife, Anamika Chand-Singh, and five-month-old son Arnav Singh.

Gustavo Perez Arriaga was taken into custody after he was arrested in Bakersfield one week later. He is charged with homicide.

“Ronil touched so many lives. Tough as it is, a person came up to us and said he loved him even though it was Ronil who arrested him. Even people he came in contact with,” Chief Richardson said.

“It has a rough week for us, but it is an honour to see everyone out. The impact of the community’s support is amazing.

“I don’t think we will ever fill the void left by Ronil. Unfortunately, we have never been through this and I don’t know how to fill the void. We will do our best to continue without him and take it from here.”

Chief Richardson said Ronil would always be a hero.

“Ronil was passionate and he struggled to become a citizen and become a police officer. All he wanted to do in America was to become a police officer and to give him that chance through hard work was my honour,” he said.

“I am glad that the justice system is going, but it still doesn’t bring back Ronil. I would rather not be doing or any of this.

“We are going to include Ronil’s K9 Sam in every part of this and make sure as much as possible. It’s family even our K9 are family. The handlers take their K9 with them when they go home and we have to make sure to take care of the family.”

The Stanislaus Sworn Deputies Association (SSDA) has established a Corporal Ronil Singh, Newman PD Memorial Fund.
