Ana Tawanakoro, 23, is the first Fijian student to participate in the 5th International Young Chef Olympiad in India. The competition began in 2015 and has been tagged the greatest culinary Olympiad.

The competition invites student chefs and their mentors from more than 60 countries to compete across Delhi, Bangalore, Pune and Kolkata in India.

Her mentor Anish Lal, who is an Assistant Instructor with the Department of Food and Beverages at FNU, will accompany her.

Ms Tawanakoro was selected on merit. She is pursuing a Trade Diploma in Culinary Art at the Fiji National University’s Nasese Campus

“I was thrilled and quite emotional when I was chosen by our lecturers to represent Fiji,” she said.

“It is an honour and I hope to make the country proud.”

Originally from Sasa, Ba, she lives in Vatuwaqa Suva with her mother and two siblings.

“From what I can remember I have watched my mother cook and my love for the craft is inspired by her. My passion for cooking is part of who I am,” she said.

“I would like to dedicate my achievements to her, despite being a single mother she sacrificed every cent of her income to put me and my siblings through school.”

Determined to make her presence felt on a global platform, she has already started with preparations for the competition.
