Bayly Welfare Trust Labasa kept it’s end of the bargain by giving Malika Shadiya, 16, school supplies for topping her class.

Malika had promised Satishwar Chand, the Trust Manager that she would top her class. She did so with flying colours.

“When I visited with my grandmother Hasima Bi last year, Mr Chand encouraged me to come first, and that he would help me with school supplies in 2019,” Malika said.

“My grandmother suffers from a rare disease and she often needs my help to call the ambulance as she can’t walk to Labasa Hospital. The Trust has been supporting my sick 56-year-old grandmother since 2013, “said the aspiring doctor.

“My grandfather passed away 13 years ago. My mother left me in her care when I was seven months as I suffer from seizure disorders.”

Ms Bi with tears said she struggled to send Malika to school.

“I sold whatever chickens I had and begged money from neighbours and relatives over the years just to help my granddaughter go to school.

“She has one uniform and I would wash it so that she could wear it again the next day.

She even wore worn out shoes because I didn’t have enough money as I often became sick.”

“Despite taking care of me when I was sick, she was still able to top her class,” she said.

“I am really proud of my granddaughter for lifting the burden and I would also like to thank Mr Chand and the Bayly Welfare Trust for their continuous support.

“Now she has two pairs of uniform, a brand new school bag, shoes and books.”
