The Vodafone Fijian football head coach Christophe Gamel is impressed with the 52 players that marched into camp on Monday to be part of the Vodafone national Under-23 trials.

The nine-day programme began on Tuesday at the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Academy in Ba and ends on January 16.

Also reporting to camp are overseas based- players of Hamish Shakeel from Australia while from New Zealand are Shaheel Singh, Rajneil Chand, Cory Sharma and Raihan Azim.

“I’m happy to see the big numbers put their hands up for the national team,” Gamel told SUNsports.

“The call from local and overseas players have been overwhelming but I did not expect that many. The mindset is now changing.

“The level is not there yet but we need to develop them. The boys are fully motivated.”

Gamel said the final team will be named by the end of June.

The 2019 Oceania Football Confederation U23 Championship will be hosted in Fiji in September.

The winner will qualify as OFC’s representative to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.

Meanwhile, the Northern based- players will join camp on Friday as the weather impasse over the weekend disrupted their travel plans
