National rep and Fiji Airways cabin crew Avikash Lal is tipped to win the inaugural Jet Road Race Series 2019 on Saturday at the Fiji Airports compound in Namaka, Nadi.

The event is organised by the Nadi based- Jet Runners Club where the four leg (5 kilometres and 1.5km series) will end in April.

Lal has been in tip top form with the aim to represent Fiji at the Pacific Games in Samoa this year.

“I’m training well and looking for more competition, the more the event and competitors the better it will be,” he said.

“We need to grow especially in the endurance sports. There are a lot of sportspeople out there and we need to bring the best.”

He completed his first full marathon (42.2km) last November at the Shanghai International Marathon in China.

He has also received offer from the Chinese government through the agents to compete in other internationals events across China.

Former national marathon runners Bimlesh Kumar, Parshotam Lal, Abhinesh Kumar and Sanjay Kumar will also take part in the club race.

Jet Runners Club president Abhinesh Kumar said points would awarded in each leg and at the end of the series the top three runners for both male and female will be rewarded.

“This year we’re expecting more participation and better results when compared to last year,” he said.

“In May the club will organise a 10km road championship, from the month of June to September there will be cross country, mountain running and beach running.”

The categories include 5km for secondary school students, Open, Veteran and Masters 50 plus a 1.5km for Under-12 category.
