Changing the mindset of players to become more passionate about football will be the main goal of newly appointed Suva coach Intiaz Khan.

The former Suva and national star defender was officially appointed as coach as he takes over from Gurjit Singh.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Khan said he was grateful to Suva Football Association executives for their confidence in him.

“I thank them for placing their faith in me and giving me the opportunity to coach Suva in 2019,” the former national FUTSAL coach said.

“I know it’s not an easy task to decide on who to coach the side. What I have analyzed over the years with the team is that most players are taking football as a profession and my goal is to change that mindset and let it become a passion.

“I personally feel that’s what Suva Football needs to improve their performance and rankings in the league competition.

“I’m confident that the current players in the team have the capabilities but they need to have pride and passion for the sport which will enable them to achieve their goals.”

Khan also urged the fans to give him time to prove his worth as a coach.

“I’m aware that as coach it won’t take me that quick to take the team to the top.

“I will need some time to adjust, prove myself and deliver what’s expected of me,” he said.

“So, I’m calling out to all loyal Suva fans to please give me their support and time as things won’t happen overnight.”

Khan said he’s not there to teach the players how to play but instead to prepare a winning and unbeaten team.

“I also understand these players are paid to play for their district teams since it is their bread and butter.

“Despite being a source of income the important thing the players need to know is to have the passion for the sport because once you have that you will perform to the best of your ability.”

Khan played for Suva for 16 years and the highlight of his career was when he scored the winner in the 2-1 triumph over Navua in the 1995 Battle of the Giants final at the now ANZ Stadium.

Meanwhile, star Ba midfielder Abbu Zahid is expected to move to Lautoka while nippy Tavua striker Kaliova Dau is moving to Ba.
