Maritime Student Fined $100 For Drug Offence

A 26-year-old maritime student of Suva has been fined $100 for a drug-related offence.

Seru Sela was convicted of one count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs and sentenced by Magistrate Jioji Boseiwaqa.

On May 19, 2018, in Suva, after midnight, without lawful authority, Sela possessed 2.8 grams of cannabis sativa, an illicit drug.

At about 12.10am, on May 19, 2018, a Police team had seen Sela and others drinking and walking along the road in Kaunitoni Street. The patrol officers stopped and searched the group.

Six sachets of dried leaves were found on Sela. He was arrested and the dried leaves were sent for analysis which confirmed to consist 2.8 grams of cannabis sativa. In mitigation, Sela had told the court that he was a student and sought for a non-conviction.

Magistrate Boseiwaqa imposed a $100 fine on Sela and ordered him to pay in 30 days. He told Sela if in default of the fine, 10 days of imprisonment will apply.

The Court also ordered that the drugs that were still in the police custody were to be destroyed in the presence of a court staff and a certificate confirming the same was to be forwarded to the court for its record after 30 days from the sentence. Sela was given 28 days to file an appeal to the High Court of Fiji.
