National rep and Fiji Airways cabin crew Avikash Lal took out first race in the inaugural Jet Road Race Series 2019 in Nama­ka, Nadi yesterday.

Lal who aims to run in his second Pacific Games event in Samoa clocked 17.01 minutes in the Open grade ahead of Abhinesh Kumar (28 min. 10s) and Praneet Reddy (30 min) in the 5 kilo­metres race.

“I want to run in the Pacific Games,” he said.

“I attended the first trial and my time was a B standard but I will try my best to improve on my time and hit the A standard. The second trial will be on February 8,” he said.

“I’ve competed at the world stage at the 5000 and 10,000metres. Looking to build more speed for the 1500m and I love the challenge to balance training and work as well.”

Lal won a bronze medal at the 2015 Pacific Games in the half marathon. He won two silver medals in the 5000m and the half marathon at the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu.

His target is to win three gold med­als either in the 5000m, 10,000m, half marathon or the 1500m.

Jet Runners Club president Ab­hinesh Kumar said they had 20 par­ticipants.

“We had primary, secondary, veteran 40 plus, and 50 plus categories. The next race is scheduled on the second week of next month,” he added.
