First Time Offender To Be Sentenced

A 22-year-old first time offender and student of University of the South Pacific (USP) pleaded guilty at the Labasa Magistrates court yesterday to serious assault and drunk and disorderly conduct.

Ratu Seru Baleivavalagi appeared before Magistrate Cama Tuberi and was represented by Legal Aid Commission defense council.

He was charged with one count of serious assault and one count of drunk and disorderly conduct. The charges were read, to which he pleaded guilty.

It is alleged that on June 18, 2018 in Delailabasa, Baleivavalagi was holding on to a Telecom Fiji Limited (TFL) post when the victim told him to go home.

The accused allegedly punched the victim, the victim fell onto the footpath and was attacked and received injuries.

In his mitigation, defense lawyer informed the court that Baleivavalagi was an ambitious USP student who lives with his parents and he was sorry for the incident as it unfortunately took place under the influence of alcohol.

The case has been adjourned to March 18 for sentencing.
