Man, 20, Admits Drug Charge

A 20-year-old man of Savusavu pleaded guilty at the Labasa Magistrates Court yesterday to possession of illicit drugs.

Viliame Elia appeared before Magistrate Cama Tuberi and represented himself.

The charges were read to the accused and he pleaded guilty.

Mr Elia told the court that the decision was on his own free will and that nobody had forced him.

It is alleged that July 6, 2018, Mr Elia was found in possession of 3.6 grams of marijuana while being searched by Police officers.

He was taken to Seaqaqa Police Station, caution interviewed and then formally charged.

Mr Elia agreed to the summary of facts read by the Police prosecution.

In his mitigation, Mr Elia said that he was the breadwinner of his family and sought forgiveness for what he had done.

Mr Elia has a child.

“I have learnt a lot from this incident and I promise that it won’t happen again,” he said.

The case has been adjourned to March 4 for sentencing.
