Candidates undergo training during the National Fire Authority selection process.

Female officers will be among 70 personnel that the National Fire Authority (NFA) will be recruiting for the 2018-2019 financial year.

With two fire stations on the verge of completion; one in Nabouwalu Vanua Levu and the other in Rakiraki, NFA chief executive officer Manasa Lesuma said there was a need for additional officers on the ground.

He said work has also commenced on two other stations, one in Lami and the other Nakasi, which indicated the need to boost human resources.

“Budget has been approved for 70 recruits for this financial year which ends on July 31, 2019,” Mr Lesuma said.

“We have begun with the first round of recruitments and last week we conducted the first phase of the selection process including fitness, skills training, aptitude test and other tests.

“We are looking to recruit 35 officers from this batch.”

Mr Lesuma said female applicants had also expressed their interest to join the field and they went through similar training and tests last week.

“The NFA will be conducting another round of recruitments once the first 35 are enlisted,” he said.

“We rely on these officers to save lives, so we need to have officers who are fit and can effectively perform their roles,” Mr Lesuma said.

“We take applicants who have passed Year 12, but we also need them to be medically fit and be able to handle the pressure in tough situations.”
