The chairperson of the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights, Alvick Maharaj, has assured that submissions made by the public would be taken on board and deliberated on by the committee.

Submissions were made by the general public regarding the Code of Conduct Bill No 33 of 2018 at the Labasa Town Council Chambers yesterday.

Mr Maharaj said once all submissions were received, discussions would be undertaken in order to reach finalisation.

He said everything would then be submitted to Parliament.

“The general public could also get access to the Bill from the Fijian Parliament website as well,” he said.

“We have also received a lot of written submissions, which will be deliberated upon.”

He said the bill would be applicable to all civil servants, to various Ministers, Speaker, President and parliamentarians of Fiji.

A submission made suggested allocating a certain time frame from which complaints could be received.

Discussions by the committee included a restriction to legitimise complaints should the submission be taken on board.

It was also suggested that the commission in charge could run a preliminary investigation to determine the nature and validity of a case and whether it should be investigated further.

Mr Maharaj said that the final decision would however be made by the Commission.

The committee will be at the Savusavu Provincial Administration office today holding submissions from 11am to 3pm.
