Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said that there were about two or three doctors who had to be disciplined in past years through the Ministry of Civil Service.

He said they were disciplined because of poor communication, not making the right decisions and not having the right attitude.

Being a medical doctor himself and disturbed by the report, Mr Waqainabete said: “It is sad to hear reports of doctors and medical professionals who are rude, or perceived to be uncaring in their dealing with patients.”

Eighty-three new doctors were yesterday inducted at Novotel Suva Lami bay.

Speaking to the new doctors about the importance of professionalism, efficiency, having compassion and humanity he also reminded them that they were there to serve and not to be served.

“Doctors should be humble and willing to accept positive and negative feedback,” he said.

“I love negative feedback because it is where I can reflect with how I provide services. I hope that I can change the things I am able to.”

Dr Waqainabete said the internship programme provides a wonderful platform to showcase the calibre of a person, and most importantly how doctors set up ways to manage and maintain client confidence and satisfaction.

“Teamwork is essential so you must show respect for those around you at all times. We need doctors who are proactive.”

There have been a number of new initiatives that Government has implemented like the National Health Call Centre, which allows the public to provide feedback on services which can be used to guide improvements.
