Udu Villagers Assured Help
Villagers of Udu in Totoya, Lau, were yesterday assured by Government representatives that their grievances would be looked into.
The villagers were glad to be given the opportunity to share their views with the Ministry of Fisheries permanent secretary, Craig Strong, during a talanoa session.
Mr Strong and his team are touring Totoya and Ono-i-Lau this week.
Village headman, Railala Bilitaki, said inconsistent water supply during the dry season was a major problem in the village.
Mr Bilitaki said a team from the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) had surveyed the village as plans were in place to install another water tank.
However, he said there has been no update by the authority so far.
Mr Strong assured the villagers that he would note down their grievances and let the authority know.
The village consisting of 23 homes with a population of over 55 people shares one 150000L water tank during the dry season when the water source dries up.
“The one tank in the village is too small to cater for all the villagers in Udu. We had raised this with the WAF in 2017 when they came to our village,” Mr Bilitaki said.
“This is because when it rains and the tank is full and the water overflows. So we want to store the water when it does not rain.
“We are lucky we have a creek and a well, but then at the end of the day it is not always safe. We hope that our grievances are taken into consideration,” he added.
He said they were looking forward to receiving help from the Government.
