Families living in Urata, Labasa, are glad that all is safe despite being stranded for at least two hours or more because of flooded rivers and streams.

A flash flood in Urata on Tuesday temporarily stopped traffic and prevented people from reaching their homes.

Rakesh Chand, 51, who lives in the area, said the flooded crossing left his wife worried. He and other residents were stranded at both ends of the river.

Heavy rain in the North recently prompted reports of flooded rivers and streams.

“It was around six in the evening when I was making my way back home. Suddenly, I saw many vehicles near the crossing and the rushing flood waters ahead,” said Mr Chand.

“The current was really strong and no one dared to cross the flooded river.”

As it grew darker those stranded grew worried because it was still unsafe to cross.

At the other end, Mr Chand informed his wife, Sunita, that he would be turning up home late as a result of the flooded river.

Mrs Chand said she really worried and pleaded with her husband to return home as soon as the flood waters subsided.

“I reached home at around 8pm, but I was happy to be back,” he said.

The flood, however, has gotten everyone in the community mindful that the hurricane season was not over.

Northern Divisional Police Commander Senior Superintendent of Police Eparama Waqa is calling on the public to be vigilant and cautious during this season.

Students and young children were also urged not to risk their lives by attempting to cross flooded rivers or streams.
