After a 3-year lapse the Vodafone Women’s Inter-District Championship is finally back with the pool games to be played on January 25-27 at the Fiji Football Association academy grounds in Vatuwaqa, Suva.

The following week will be the finals while the venue is yet to be decided.

The tournament preparations saw the drawing of the two pools at the Fiji FA headquarters yesterday.

Speaking during the pool draws Vodafone sponsorship manager Adriu Vakarau was grateful for the opportunity to sponsor the women’s IDC tournament.

“Vodafone Fiji is excited to have secured sponsorship with Fiji Football Association for the next five years,” Vakarau said.

“For the women’s football respectively 2018 had been a very successful year especially after being ranked second in the OFC Women’s Championship in Noumea, New Caledonia.

“And it clearly gives us an indication of the hardwork put in by the association and the executives involved behind the scene.

“As sponsors we always like to push ourselves to be the number one network in Fiji and with the relationship of our sponsorship we ensure to give our best support.

“And looking at the women’s IDC football competition after a lapse of three years due to some unforeseen circumstances we’re excited to host the event once again.

“We also would wish all the teams the very best in this competition.”

Fiji FA vice-president Yogeshwar Singh said they’re happy to host the tournament.

“Initially, we had scheduled the tournament to be played in November last year but due to unfavourable weather conditions we had to shift the dates to January.

“We’re grateful to have revived women football IDC which will become the first tournament to host this year.

“Our aim this year is to win the gold medal at the 2019 Pacific Games in Samoa and also secure a spot in the World Cup.

“We’re going on the right track at the moment and hopefully the men’s football team will do the same.”

Fiji FA women’s football director Susan Wise said women’s IDC began in 2001.

“From then on it has been played every year except for 2007 and then in 2016 to 2018,” she said.

“Over the years Ba women’s side have won the title seven times, the Suva women’s side five times while Labasa once.

“This year the Vodafone Women’s IDC will have eight teams competing and these teams have qualified on merit.

“I’m proud to say that now we’ve 15 districts participating in the league and next year we’ll also be having the Under-16 and U18 competitions running alongside the main women’s league competition.

“Women’s football has been struggling over the years since its inception. Now we can say that we are in line with the regional and international standards. All this was made possible through the generous sponsorship of Vodafone Fiji Limited.”
