44 Lifters For Second Trials

Weightlifting Fiji (WF) will hold its second selection trials to select its team for the 2019 Pacific Games and Junior World Championships at the National Fitness Centre, Suva tomorrow.

Weigh-in starts at 6am followed by the competition starting at 8am. This is the second of five trials to be held for team selection.

Weightlifting Fiji general secretary Ritesh Ratiram said: “We’re looking at 44 athletes competing on Saturday.

“There will be 23 athletes from the Dogowale Weightlifting Club, 5 from the Makosoi Weightlifting Club and 15 athletes from Suva Weightlifting Club and 1 athlete from Kadavu.”

Dogowale and Makosoi clubs from Serua are the newest clubs that have joined WF.

“The first trials saw a lot of young lifters who competed in their first formal competition. The second trial should be a lot more competitive,” stated WF.

WF is adopting International team selection requirements where athletes are required to submit Expressions of Interest (EOI) to be in the running for team inclusion. This is also in line with the World anti-Doping Authority’s requirements for athlete whereabouts information. The EOI is due by January 31.

The weightlifting competition at the 2019 Pacific Games will also double as the Oceania Championships and the Commonwealth Championships. There will be Youth, Junior and Senior categories at this competition in Samoa.

Both the Pacific Games and the Junior World Championships serve as qualification events for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
