Lawyer and fashion designer Sabrina Khan says refuge will cater for widows and for poor and disadvantaged women.

Human Rights lawyer and Fijian Fashion Designer, Sabrina Iqbal Khan, is calling on businesses in the West to financially aid the construction of six units at the Almanah Hope Centre in Teidamu, Lautoka.

The Proverbs Women Collection designer said funds for the six units at the Centre will be raised through a major five-star fashion show, which would be showcasing a special collection. It will take place at a prestigious restaurant in Nadi in June this year.

“The funding for the refuge comprising of six units would total to about $80,000, which will cater for the needs of poor widows,” Ms Khan said.

She added that this would be the first stage of the centre.

“We will need to buy white goods such as fridges, washing machines, microwaves, electric jugs and also beds, sofas and beddings, tables and chairs, to furnish one unit it will cost about $6000.”

She said all funds raised from the fashion show would go towards the project.

“Any funds donated by business houses, religious organisations, Fijian residents abroad and even individuals will be highly appreciated,” she said.

“This is a major charitable facility for widows, the poor and disadvantaged women and it is worthy of everyone’s support.”

When the units are completed, she said women would then attend training such as creating purses from recycled paper, flowers from scrap material, floral art and many more.

“This is a positive way of allowing the women to be independent and earn an income for themselves.”
