Labasa Magistrate Reject Bail For Pastor In Rape Charge

A Christian Mission Fellowship (CMF) Church Pastor  request to be released on bail was rejected by the Labasa Magistrate Court.

The 66-year-old pastor has been charged with one count of sexual assault, one count abduction and two counts of rape of a 16-year-old girl.
He appeared before Magistrate Cama Tuberi.

It was alleged that the pastor committed the offences between November last year to early this year on four different occasions.

Police Prosecutor Constable Avikash Lal informed the court that this was an indictable offence and needs to be transferred to Labasa High Court.

He also informed the court that they were objecting the accused to be released on bail as he was residing in the same place as the victim and there was likely chances that he would interfere with state witnesses.

Moreover, he said this case was of public interest.

Magistrate Tuberi asked the accused if he wanted to say something.

The accused replied he wanted to engage with Legal Aid Commission lawyer and to be released on bail so that he can look after his family.

Magistrate Tuberi rejected his request saying that it was an indictable offence and transferred the case to the Labasa High Court.

Magistrate Tuberi said the accused can make his bail application before the Labasa High Court and be further remanded in custody.

The case has been adjourned for mention on February 15.
