Salaseini Ratuvuku is thankful that the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme (TELS) helped her complete her law education.

Ms Ratuvuku was at the admission ceremony for newly-admitted lawyers at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

“I first started studying Law at the University of the South Pacific and transferred to Fiji National University,” she said.

“It took me six years to complete the Bachelor of Law and Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (GDLP) and I graduated last year in May.

“My mother partly paid my fees and when TELS was introduced, I took up that opportunity.”

The 26-year-old is a Legal Assistant at Telecom Fiji Limited. She is originally from Nakasa in Cakaudrove.

It was Ms Ratuvuku’s late father who inspired her to become a lawyer.

“When I was just three years old, my father told me to become a lawyer. After he passed away, I kept his promise,” she said.

“I feel like now I have fulfilled his dreams.”

Ms Ratuvuku’s message was to work hard.

“To be successful you need to work hard and have goals in life and keep working towards your goals.”

Her mother, Luisa Ratuvuku, said her daughter had faced a lot of challenges.

“My daughter gets distracted very easily, hence it is my job to look after her and keep her on the right track,” she said.

“I am so glad she kept her father’s promise and sometimes it is best that a father’s advice is taken.”
