The first-ever International Seminar to promote Hindi abroad by the Department of Official Languages, Ministry of Home Affairs, India, was organised at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva on January 15, 2019.

It was organised by High Commission of India with the support of Indian Public Sector Undertaking Companies like Bank of Baroda, LICI, New India Assurance and WAPCOS.

A high powered Indian delegation, led by the Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, who was also the chief guest, participated in the International seminar.

Mr Rijiju said Hindi was a strong medium of communication not only in India, but also at the international level.

“It was a historic moment when the first such conference organized by the Ministry of Home Affairs is happening in Fiji,” he said.

“India has a special relationship with Fiji, with Hindi as an integral part of the social and cultural landscape of Fiji. Government of India will provide all kinds of assistance in promoting Hindi in Fiji.”

He expressed happiness over the fact that there was a consistent effort to spread friendship and harmony among communities through Hindi and Indian culture.

Mr Rijiju mentioned the fact that an iTaukei origin scholar of Fiji, Nemani Bainivalu, was awarded the ‘Vishva Hindi Samman’ in the World Hindi Conference held in Mauritius, East Africa, in August 2018.

High Commissioner of India to Fiji Vishvas Sapkal said that as the first ray of the sun was received in Fiji, so too was the first such International conference on TOLIC organised in Fiji. He also thanked and congratulated the Government of Fiji for promoting Hindi at all levels, particularly amongst young generations.

Mr Sapkal said the forthcoming International Hindi Conference will be held from March 15 to 17, 2019 and the biggest international event of Hindi, the World Hindi Conference, which will be held in Fiji in 2021.
