If you are in a service industry and you begin to care about the people you deal with, you’ll be amongst the happiest people on the planet.

This was highlighted by Chief Justice Anthony Gates to the 80 corporate staff during the Legal Aid Commission 8th Annual National Corporate Staff Training at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa in Natadola yesterday.

Justice Gates said it was the selfless people who didn’t think more of themselves that concentrated more on others that needed assistance.

He said this was also what all religions looked at; assisting others first.

“It is the people who do not think always of themselves; of the aches and pains and scratches and all the rest of it, and the things that aren’t right in their lives, but rather they concentrate a bit of focus on somebody else who is in need of help which you can give, and if you are able to turn your life around to think more about others; after all I think almost all the religions that we follow are telling us to do just that,” Justice Gates said.

“If we can turn our lives around then we will be so happy. Why? Because we are not concentrating on our elements and our faults and our flaws and our disappointments, but rather we are helping somebody else, and if that person is going away from your office a little bit more relaxed concerning the problem he came or she came to your office about and spoke to you about and you half resolved that, then you will be a very happy, satisfied person.”

He told the participants that the Legal Aid Commission’s service delivery was similar to that of a hospital.

“A hospital patches up wounds, repairs organs, heals illness and nurses are almost more crucial than surgeons or doctors,” he said.

“Do you care about the people who come for your support and help at the office?”

Justice Gates added there was no reason for being rude even to those who couldn’t be comforted.

“There are people who cannot be comforted, who cannot be restrained, who cannot be reasonable, there are not many of them but there are some but even if they are in that category we do not have to be rude, you have a way of dealing with it,” he added.
