The Ministry of Agriculture and municipalities are working with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) on settling concerns which have been raised about stray dogs.

Records show an increase in stray dogs attacking people.

Jone Nakauvadra, chief executive officer of the Lautoka City Council mentioned that stray dogs have been a major concern in most municipalities and as a result they have taken a lead role by trapping stray dogs and even constructing a pounding centre.

“Municipal councils are working with SPCA who have been conducting de-sexing programmes for dogs,” he said.

The enforcement of the Dogs Act and Stray Animals Act are both the primary responsibilities of the Ministry of Agriculture.

However, in partnership with other stakeholders this issue can be resolved.
