Accused Pastor Manasa Ulacake.

HE IS CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT, ABDUCTION AND RAPE OF GIRL, 16

A Christian Mission Fellowship (CMF) pastor’s request to be released on bail was rejected yesterday by the Labasa Magistrate Court.

The 66-year-old Manasa Ulacake who appeared before Magistrate Cama Tuberi is being charged with one count sexual assault, one count abduction and two counts of rape of a 16-year-old girl.

He appeared before Magistrate Tuberi who asked the accused if he wanted to say something. The accused replied he wanted to engage a Legal Aid lawyer and that he be released on bail so that he could look after his family.

Magistrate Tuberi rejected his request saying the offences were indictable and he transferred the case to the High Court. He told the accused that he could make his bail application before the High Court in Labasa and further remanded him in custody.

It is alleged the Pastor Ulacake committed the offences between November last year and early this year on four different occasions. Police prosecutor Constable Avikash Lal reminded the court that this was an indictable offence and needed to be transferred to the High Court.

The prosecutor also pointed out that the case held a lot of public interest.

The matter has been adjourned for mention to February 15.
