Getting the basics rights is the most important aspect for Squash Fiji, says vice-president and coach, Sydney Simpson as they prepare for the Samoa Pacific Games which will be from July 7-20.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Simpson said he aims to get the basics right because it’s the foundation for any sports.

“That is what I’ll go for before making the final selection for the Pacific Games,” he said.

Simpson said they would make the final selection during the Fiji Games which is on the Easter weekend in April.

“It will be a fair selection as FASANOC has set strict criteria for players to meet.

“It’s a young team, I have coached most of these players when they were little, but I have never taken them to the level like the Pacific Games” he added.

Simpson is keeping his hopes high of possibly winning a gold medal with his young team despite not having the senior players on board.

“I want them to play some senior players from overseas, so that they can get some experience.” Next Saturday, Squash Fiji will be having their first national trial in Nadi.”
