The villagers of Doi in Ono-i-Lau are pleased to hear from Government that a solution to their shop’s stock problem is available.

The Minister for Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau, during a talanoa session at the village last Thursday, assured the villagers that they could help ship over new stock for the shop without having to pay for the freight.

Mr Koroilavesau said they would look into all the matters raised by the villagers of Doi.

“When the Government boat comes to the village to buy the fish from the fishermen we can also bring the groceries. It would be cheap because the shop owners don’t have to pay for the freight,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

“When the shop owners use the other boats then they have to pay and when they sell the items at the village the prices on the item will be increased so that it can cover the boat expenses too. We have to look for ways to help and ensure that the villagers are happy.”

Village shop owner Sekope Waqa gave the minister’s idea the thumbs up.

Village headman Mataika Pasi said any delay in shipment was always a problem for them.

“The boat sometimes gets delayed for a month and it is really late. Our island is far from the mainland and when the shop in the village runs out of groceries we are the ones who are suffering,” Mr Pasi said.

“However, we are very happy that Mr Koroilavesau has assured us that they would help us in any way possible. I am pleased about the talanoa session because we are able to talk about things that matter to us, especially when we need help.”
