The villagers of Udu in Totoya, Lau, are hoping Government will help them rebuild their evacuation centre at the village.

Udu Village was badly damaged by Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016. The villagers lost loved ones as well.

Village headman Railala Bilitaki said the evacuation centre was something that they needed.

“Cyclone Winston really affected us in 2016 and we never want something like that to happen again. We lost sons, fathers, daughters and mothers at the time and we do not want the history to repeat again,” Mr Bilitaki said.

“We want an evacuation centre which would be used during emergency. We are hoping that the Government will help us.”

The Minister for Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau, who was touring the Lau Group last week, met the villagers and heard of their grievances, including the need to build a nursing station at the village.

“When someone is sick at the village we have to go all the way to Tovu Village and that will cost us $50. We live in the village and it is not easy to get that money during an emergency,” Mr Bilitaki said.

“We want a nursing station to be built at the village so that we don’t have to suffer again. When someone is sick and don’t have $50 then they will not visit the hospital.

“We need the Government to look into this matter and help us.”
